5392 (2026). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister for Children: What, if any, therapeutic and other elements for young people who do not participate in the Oranga Tamariki Military-Style Academy are included in the budget allocation for young serious offenders?

Hon Karen Chhour: I am advised by Oranga Tamariki that young people who are declared a Young Serious Offender under the proposed legislation but are not subject to a Military-Style Academy Order will receive individual needs assessments to determine which therapeutic interventions would be most beneficial for them, including consideration of their family/whānau needs. I am further advised the implementation of proposed legislation includes the allocation of $29.8 million operating expenditure from the 2025/26 financial year to 2028/29 financial year, to enable Oranga Tamariki to support young people who receive a Young Serious Offender declaration.
