5300 (2026). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister for Sport and Recreation: What process, if any, was followed for the appointment of Duane Kale to Sport New Zealand Board?

Hon Mark Mitchell: Duane Kale was first appointed to the Sport New Zealand Board as a member in August 2021. An appropriate process was followed in accordance with the Public Service Commission’s appointments guidelines and the requirements of the Crown Entities Act 2004. I am advised that the Ministry for Culture and Heritage (the Ministry) conducted an open search for candidates for the Board and sought nominations from Government nominating agencies. The Ministry received 105 applications and nominations, and appointees were confirmed after the Ministry held due diligence interviews and undertook background checks for shortlisted candidates.
