5255 (2026). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister for Children: How, if at all, will Oranga Tamariki assess that the improvements seen in the young people who participated in the first Military-Style Academy are sustained?

Hon Karen Chhour: I am advised by Oranga Tamariki the evaluation of the Military-Style Academy Pilot included an analysis of re-offending six months before the residential phase compared to the six months after their release from the residence. Offending patterns were examined using Police Recorded Crime Offender Statistics (RCOS) data, which was current to 30 April 2025 at the time of the analysis. To assess whether the improvements seen in the Military Style Academy Pilot cohort are sustained, I am further advised that Oranga Tamariki will undertake an internal analysis using RCOS data, comparing the twelve months prior to the young people entering the residential phase with the twelve months after their release.
