5069 (2024). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Local Government: Has the Minister consulted with the local government sector on proposed legislation to require referendums on Māori wards, and if not, why not?
Hon Simeon Brown: Since the Government’s proposed changes were signalled in the coalition agreements, I have had a number of conversations with representatives of the local government sector about the proposal to reintroduce referendums. While there has been no formal consultation process with the local government sector, communities and councils will have the opportunity to provide feedback during the select committee process.
