Ingrid Leary to the Minister for Mental Health: Has the Minister spoken to universities about growing post-graduate clinical psychology training places by a minimum of 10 places per year (compounding) from 2025 through to 2027; and annual associate psychology capacity for at least 20 students from 2026; if so, which universities and when?

Hon Matt Doocey: Yes, I discussed this last year with the University of Canterbury and met with Hon Penny Simmonds, the then Tertiary Minister on this topic. In addition, I am advised Health New Zealand has recently run an RFP for the ‘associate psychology’ programme development, in order to put in place two tertiary providers from 2026.
