4925 (2026). Arena Williams to the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs: Does the Minister agree with the Christchurch mother who said in 2025, following a near-death miss for her child from a corded blind accident, “I’d like to see a law put in place that would make free-hanging blind cords a thing of the past”?
Hon Scott Simpson: I am considering advice from officials on options to address risks posed by corded window coverings. In the meantime, I strongly encourage households and suppliers to follow Product Safety New Zealand’s guidance: choose cordless designs where possible, and where corded products are already in use, ensure cords are secured with appropriate tension devices and kept out of reach of children.
