4358 (2024). Lemauga Lydia Sosene to the Minister of Internal Affairs: What advice, if any, did the Minister receive from the Royal Commission into Abuse in
Care for extending its final reporting timeframe?
Hon Brooke van Velden: The Royal Commission into Abuse in Care (the Royal Commission) formally advised me on 16 February 2024 that it needed an extension of time for its final report in order to complete complex natural justice processes related to its final findings and recommendations, as is required by the Inquiries Act 2013.
In the Royal Commission’s view, a failure to complete this process, or a rushed process, would expose the Royal Commission to the risk of judicial review, which the Crown would be required to defend with associated costs and delays.
