4198 (2024). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Minister of Police: What work has been undertaken to reassure the community in Gisborne since the double homicide occurred on 23 March?
Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that the following work has been undertaken to reassure the community in Gisborne:
• External Investigative Support
- Additional investigators brought into the region from across the country to ensure that the investigation is progressed in an expedient manner.
• Liaison and Reassurance
Rural officers, Iwi Liaison Officers and Prevention staff (Youth Community and Whangaia Nga Pa Harakeke) were deployed into communities to undertake community reassurance duties which include:
- Liaison with community leaders and local schools
- Liaison and tangi planning with whanau pani.
- Liaison and tangi planning with Marae and hapu leaders
- Community reassurance patrols in Elgin.
• Communication Strategy
- Strategic regional and Iwi leaders briefed throughout the week via phone and email from the Area Commander.
- Reassurance communications were disseminated to the wider public service to ensure that agencies felt safe and were able to deliver their services with confidence.
- Media releases and interviews to reassure the general public.
• Continuance of Business As Usual High Visibility Activities
- CBD foot patrols to engage and reassure retailers.
