4158 (2026). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: What actions has the Minister taken, if any, to optimise existing high-security assets to reduce or delay the need for new capacity, and what additional capacity has this achieved?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that Corrections have worked hard to optimise existing capacity to safely and securely accommodate the prison population. This includes opening 1,188 beds across the prison network in 2025. I am further advised that Corrections is continuing to take a number of steps to optimise existing high-security capacity, including ensuring prisoners are placed appropriately based on their level of risk, and prioritising prisoners who are identified as not suitable to double bunk for single cell accommodation. I am also advised that Corrections have further existing accommodation due to be opened throughout 2026, including at Rimutaka Prison and Waikeria Prison.
