4108 (2026). Arena Williams to the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs: How much money, if any, would it impose on individual taxpayers to implement mandatory product safety standards for corded blinds?

Hon Scott Simpson: The consultation document published by Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) in 2023 on options to address the safety risks of corded window coverings included preliminary estimates of option costs and benefits. It estimated the cost of regulating safety features on corded window coverings for consumers and suppliers to be between $55.8 and $95.9 million over 30 years. It also estimated the cost of regulation prohibiting exposed cords for consumers and suppliers to be between $169.1 and $290.6 million over 30 years.
