3882 (2024). Hon Jenny Salesa to the Minister of Customs: How much methamphetamine or methamphetamine utensils, if any, were seized by Customs through the passenger screening at Auckland International Airport since Hon Casey Costello became Minister?
Hon Casey Costello: I am advised that six grams of methamphetamine was seized at Auckland International Airport by the New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) between 27 November 2023 and 31 December 2023. I am unable to provide the amount of methamphetamine seized between 1 January 2024 and 26 March 2024 as Customs requires a three-month delay when publicly reporting aggregate drug seizure statistics to protect operational security and time sensitive investigative activities. However, I can advise that between 1 January 2024 and 26 March 2024, Customs has publicly reported on several drug seizures where the investigation has concluded. The Customs press releases for these seizures can be found here: https://www.customs.govt.nz/about-us/news/media-releases/ I am advised by Customs that between 27 November 2023 and 26 March 2024 (inclusive), 32 items of drug paraphernalia were seized at Auckland International Airport. Customs is not able to provide the number of these items that are used when administering methamphetamine specifically. I also refer the Member to Customs’ publicly released statistics on the Customs website which provides timely updates on the type, quantity and location of illicit drugs seized and non-drug goods interceptions.   These statistics can be accessed using the following website links: Drug seizures: https://www.customs.govt.nz/about-us/statistics/drug-interceptions/drug-seizures/ Non-drug goods intercepted: https://www.customs.govt.nz/about-us/statistics/non-drug-interceptions/goods-intercepted/
