Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister of Health: What progress has been made in the last quarter (October to December 2023) to ‘Regulate primary sunscreens as a therapeutic product’ under Outcome 3: New Zealanders have fewer cancers, as part of the New Zealand Cancer Action Plan 2019 – 2029?

Hon Dr Shane Reti: I am advised that no substantive work has been progressed or initiated in this area between October and December 2023. As a routine matter, the Ministry of Health engages with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) on sunscreens and the Sunscreen (Product Safety Standard) Act 2022 (the Sunscreen Act). MBIE is responsible for administering the Sunscreen Act and progressing any revisions to the relevant sunscreen product standard.
