3432 (2024). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Police: How many people, if any, currently hold a firearms license that allows them to own a fully operational centrefire semi-automatic weapon?
Hon Mark Mitchell: Corrected reply: I note that the Arms Act 1983 does not define any arms item as a “fully operational centrefire semiautomatic weapon”.
A standard firearms licence enables a person to possess and use a semiautomatic centrefire shotgun with a non-detachable magazine capable of holding up to 5 cartridges.
As 1 March 2024 there are 328 persons authorised to possess and use (including firing live ammunition) a prohibited firearm for the purposes of pest control and 4016 licence holders authorised to live fire a semi-automatic pistol on a certified pistol range.
