3230 (2026). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister of Education: How many initial teacher education places did The University of Waikato | Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato receive School Onsite Training Programme funding for in each of primary and secondary school programmes, listed by each year funding was recevied for?
Hon Erica Stanford: I am advised by the Ministry of Education that in 2023, the University of Waikato received School Onsite Training Programme (SOPT) funding for 63 initial teacher education places. This included 58 secondary places and five composite places. In 2024, they received 100 places, including 95 secondary places and five composite places. In 2025, they received 52 places, including 46 secondary places, two primary places and four composite places. In 2026, they received 82 places, including 77 secondary places and five primary places. They also received funding for five Māori medium places in 2026, including three secondary places and two primary places.
All initial teacher education providers applied for SOPT places according to their capacity.
