3016 (2025). Hon Jo Luxton to the Minister of Health: On average, how frequently, if ever, were Senior Medical Officers (SMOs) in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Service at Whakatāne Hospital required to wake up during the night over the course of 2024, and what, if any, measures were in place to support SMOs?
Hon Simeon Brown: Our Government is focused on delivering timely, quality healthcare for all New Zealanders. I am advised that during 2024, between the hours of 7pm and 8am there were eight gynaecology acute admissions that would have required the Senior Medical Officers to attend. As the Member will be aware, all obstetric and gynaecology SMOs have rostered recovery time post on-call.
