2989 (2024). Chlöe Swarbrick to the Minister for Resources: What consideration, if any, is the Government giving to our international obligations in the "committ[ment] to enabling oil and gas exploration beyond onshore Taranaki"?
Hon Shane Jones: The Government has committed to deliver Net Zero by 2050, including by doubling New Zealand’s renewable electricity and removing consenting barriers. Enabling oil and gas exploration beyond onshore Taranaki will help boost gas production, which is vital for a resilient energy system while we transition to renewables. It will also support our affordability goals, improve outcomes for consumers, and support critical industries. It will also help to reduce our reliance on coal, which has higher carbon emissions, helping us reach our climate change targets.
