2937 (2025). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Minister of Corrections: What is the average cost per day for parole/ residential restrictions?
Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that Corrections publishes information on the average cost of all sentences and orders in their Annual Report. I refer the member to Corrections’ Annual Reports on the Corrections website here: https://www.corrections.govt.nz/resources/strategic_reports/annual-reports. Figures for the 2023/2024 financial year can be found on page 67 in Corrections’ 2023/24 Annual Report. I am further advised that a number of sentences and orders managed by Corrections may have conditions around residential restrictions. The Annual Report provides information on the cost across each sentence and order on average. As an individual may be subject to a full or partial residential restriction condition, which may run for part or all of their sentence, and the costs, if any to Corrections, can vary depending on an individual’s living situation and accommodation, therefore to provide this information would amount to substantial collation and manual analysis to provide an answer to, which I am not prepared to ask for the purposes of this response. This is also my response for WPQ 2938 (2025), WPQ 2939 (2025), and WPQ 2940 (2025).
