2936 (2025). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Minister of Corrections: What is the average length of sentence for a person convicted of a violent offence?
Hon Mark Mitchell: Corrections does not decide who serves sentences in prison or in the community, nor the length of those sentences. Rather, those decisions are made by the Courts and the New Zealand Parole Board. I am advised that the average length of time a person had a prison sentence imposed where violence was an index offence and started during the 2023/2024 financial year was 669 days.
