2911 (2025). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister for Children: What is the average cost per young person per night in a youth justice facility?

Hon Karen Chhour: I am advised by Oranga Tamariki that the average cost per young person in the 2023/24 financial year was $1,891 per 24-hour period in a youth justice facility.  I am further advised that this is the direct cost of operating a utilised bed and includes residence staffing costs, property maintenance, programming, providers, and everyday costs such as food. The figure excludes overheads.
