2861 (2025). Hon Dr Megan Woods to the Minister of Climate Change: What steps, if any, has the Government taken to declare construction material wood waste as a priority product to help reduce emissions from construction and demolition waste in the second emissions reduction plan, as recommended by the Climate Change Commission in their 2023 report "Advice on the direction of policy for the Government's second emissions reduction plan"?
Hon Simon Watts: Wood waste has not been declared a priority product for product stewardship. However, work is being progressed to address the emissions associated with this waste stream. One of the waste sector actions in the second emissions reduction plan is, "Increasing targeted investment in resource recovery infrastructure and systems (including for construction and demolition waste)." To facilitate this action, construction and demolition waste (including timber) is a current focus of the Waste Minimisation Fund.
