2853 (2025). Hon Dr Megan Woods to the Minister of Climate Change: What steps, if any, has the Government taken to improve the accuracy and transparency of landfill gas capture data in the second emissions reduction plan, as recommended by the Climate Change Commission in their 2023 report "Advice on the direction of policy for the Government's second emissions reduction plan"?

Hon Simon Watts: I am advised that since mid-2023, the Ministry for the Environment has been engaging directly with the sector in order to better understand the landfill gas capture recovery rates and related data reported. This ongoing engagement will continue throughout the delivery of the second emissions reduction plan action "Investigating ways of improving organic waste disposal and landfill gas capture". In support of this, a number of projects have been undertaken including compositional studies and assessments of methane at different classes of landfill. These initiatives aim to enhance the Greenhouse Gas Inventory by incorporating country-specific data provided by operators.
