2846 (2025). Chlöe Swarbrick to the Minister of Climate Change: How is disaggregating the contribution of methane emissions to the 1.5 degree target consistent with the requirements of the Paris Agreement in assessing 'fair share' and 1.5 degree consistency?

Hon Simon Watts: I am advised that analysing New Zealand's biogenic methane emissions separately from other greenhouse gases allows us to understand what reductions in biogenic methane might be required globally and nationally to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, including assessment of what New Zealand's 'fair share' of biogenic methane emissions reductions could be under different equitable burden-sharing approaches. I am further advised that the Commission undertook a similar approach in its advice on New Zealand's first Nationally Determined Contribution in 2021 and its review of New Zealand's domestic 2050 emissions target in 2024.
