2478 (2024). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Justice
Written Question

2478 (2024). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Justice: Has the Minister requested further advice on alternative approaches to gang harms that may be more consistent with the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act and the Crown's obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi, as noted in advice he received from the Ministry of Justice and released under the Official Information Act, and if not, why not?
Hon Paul Goldsmith: I am satisfied that the proposals contained in the Gangs Legislation Amendment Bill are necessary to give Police the tools they need to restore public confidence in law and order. My priority is to make membership of criminal gangs as unappealing as possible, and to stop the intimidation and fear that the community experiences when gang members gather in public.
I have not sought further advice on changes to the insignia ban.
