2055 (2025). Rachel Boyack to the Associate Minister of Agriculture: How many proactive visits were made to farms as part of the investigation into allegations of mistreatment of sheep connected to shearing practices since 28.12.2024 and what were the conditions, if any, that give rise to these proactive visits?
Hon Andrew Hoggard: I am advised that between 28 December 2024 and 30 January 2025, the Ministry for Primary Industries conducted 34 proactive visits across New Zealand as part of the investigation into allegations of mistreatment of sheep connected to shearing.
The purpose of these visits was to inspect activities in and around shearing sheds, talk to those present about animal welfare requirements, and ensure compliance with the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and the Animal Welfare (Care and Procedures) Regulations 2018.
