1991 (2025). Lan Pham to the Minister for the Environment: How much, if any, chromated copper arsenate-treated wood is disposed of in New Zealand landfills every year?

Hon Penny Simmonds: I am advised by Ministry for the Environment officials that they do not specifically monitor the amount of chromated copper arsenate treated wood entering landfills. Rough estimates can be made based on reported Class 1 landfill tonnages and visual inspections of material entering landfills. An estimated 454,000 tonnes of timber is disposed of annually to Class 1 landfills. Of that timber waste, an estimated 80-90% is treated (resulting in an estimated 362,000-407,000 tonnes of treated timber disposed of to Class 1 landfills annually). The Ministry does not hold data that specifies the percentage of chromated copper arsenate treatment as opposed to other types of timber treatment, nor does the Ministry hold complete national data regarding the disposal of treated timber to Class 2-4 landfills.
