Hon Casey Costello: My statement was made in response to the question "You've talked about more accountability from Police. What does that look like?", and my full response to that question was "I strongly believe in constabulary independence and allowing police to determine how best they can reduce the incidence and impacts of crime and maintain peace. There needs to be more accountability from Police leadership that ensures officers and core functions are appropriately resourced.". The last statement is an aspirational concept that is directed to those responsible for the leadership of policing in New Zealand, including government, to ensure officers and core functions are adequately resourced.
