1582 (2024). Darleen Tana to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries: How much of the total spend on the installation and maintenance of cameras on boats, as well as the review of footage, is funded by the taxpayer, and how much by industry?

Hon Shane Jones: I am advised that $68 million was made available for the rollout of on-board cameras for the four-year period 2021/22 to 2024/25. As well as installation, maintenance, and footage review, it covers a range of other costs. The industry is paying a proportion of these costs over 2023/24 and 2024/25. The Fisheries (Cost Recovery) Rules were amended in 2023 to allow for one cost category, installation and maintenance of cameras, to be recovered from industry. In 2023/24 industry has been levied $2.6 million for these costs. The 2024/25 levy amount will be finalised in the coming months. All remaining costs, including review of footage, during the four-year rollout period are Crown funded. Funding decisions beyond the rollout period are yet to be made.
