1509 (2025). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister for Vocational Education: What communication, including text messages, emails, briefings, broken down by recipient and date, if any has the Minister sent or received regarding academic freedom at New Zealand Universities?

Hon Penny Simmonds: I refer the Member to the list below showing advice I have received regarding academic freedom at New Zealand Universities: 2 August 2024 - Free speech policy – high level timeframe for legislation. 14 August 2024 - Free Speech commitment – Legislative options. 10 October 2024 - Freedom of speech in the tertiary education system. 4 November 2024 - University freedom of speech legislation. 7 November 2024 - Further advice on university freedom of speech legislation. 15 November 2024 - Draft University Freedom of Speech Cabinet Paper. 22 November 2024 - Further advice on freedom of speech. 3 December 2024 - University freedom of speech Cabinet paper for lodgement. This answer does not cover members of my office who receive a large amount of material every week. Asking them to collate that material would require substantial collation and research and prevent them from undertaking their substantive roles.
