1497 (2026). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: What was the cost of landfill disposal charges, if any, for waste from Kāinga Ora demolitions in 2023/24 and in 2024/25?
Hon Chris Bishop: Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities advises me that its dedicated Waste Minimisation Programme, that ran until October 2024, focused on measuring total waste diverted from landfill and reporting progress against its Statement of Performance Expectations targets. In 2023/24, Kāinga Ora diverted approximately 59,000 tonnes of waste from landfill. Kāinga Ora also advise me that landfill disposal costs for demolition activity are not captured in a single, centralised system. These costs are incorporated within the overall budgets for individual redevelopment projects and form part of contracted demolition work. As a result, Kāinga Ora does not hold consolidated financial information on landfill charges. To provide this information, Kāinga Ora would be required to manually review each demolition project undertaken over the period. Kāinga Ora advises that this would require substantial staff time and cannot be completed within the timeframe available. This is also my answer to WPQ 1498 (2026).
