1418 (2025). Lan Pham to the Minister for Resources: What, if any, is the total list of minerals currently mined in Aotearoa?
Hon Shane Jones: New Zealand is prospective for a wide range of minerals, including coal, gold, silver, and titanomagnetite ironsand. A number of other industrial rocks and minerals are produced for local and export markets - including various clays, diatomite, perlite, pumice, serpentine, silica and zeolite. Not all are Crown-owned.
Minerals that are Crown-owned are subject to the Crown Minerals Act 1991 (CMA). Minerals mining permits granted under the CMA afford the permit holders exclusive rights to mine the Crown-owned minerals named on the permits. Depending on what was applied for and granted, some permits list a single mineral (eg gold) while others enable the permit holder to mine for an entire group or groups of minerals (eg all metallic and/or all non-metallic minerals). Therefore, it is not possible to say with surety what is the total list of minerals currently mined in Aotearoa.
