1385 (2025). Lemauga Lydia Sosene to the Minister of Internal Affairs: What actions, if any, has the Minister taken regarding blocking AI generated child exploitation material?

Hon Brooke van Velden: Responding to different types of illegal material is an operational matter for the Department of Internal Affairs (the Department). Computer-generated material, including AI, which depicts the exploitation of children is already illegal under the Films, Videos, Classification Publication Act 1993. I am advised that the Department blocks URLs known to host computer-generated child sexual exploitation material through its Digital Child Exploitation Filtering System. In June 2024 I announced a significant upgrade to the Digital Child Exploitation Filtering System that increased the number of blocked URLs from around 700 to up to 30,000 on any given day.
