1362 (2024). Hon Marama Davidson to the Minister of Foreign Affairs: What specific actions, if any, is the Government taking to meet its obligations under Article 1 of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide?

Rt Hon Winston Peters: New Zealand is meeting its obligations under the Genocide Convention by clearly and consistently stating its position publicly. Since the start of the conflict New Zealand has consistently called on all parties to comply with international law. The International Court of Justice’s decisions are binding so New Zealand expects all parties to comply with them. This includes the decision on provisional measures in the dispute between South Africa and Israel concerning the Genocide Convention. The Minister of Foreign Affairs has made this position clear in statements on 27 January, 11 February and 14 February. New Zealand has been clear from outset that the protection of civilians is paramount.
