1300 (2024). Tamatha Paul to the Associate Minister of Justice: What evidence, if any, does the Minister have regarding the risk of harm or violence from expanding access to semi-automatic firearms?

Hon Nicole McKee: Police data shows that violent offending involving firearms has not decreased since changes to prohibit semi-automatic firearms came into force in 2019. In the period 2016-2018 there were 32 homicides and 1,322 serious violent offences involving firearms. In comparison, in the period 2020-2022 there were 42 homicides and 1,317 serious violent offences involving firearms.
