1292 (2024). Tamatha Paul to the Associate Minister of Justice: Does the Minister agree with Superintendent Richard Wilson who states that “more than 70 per cent of firearms seized by police are rifles and shotguns that can be obtained by standard licence holders, as opposed to being smuggled into the country”, and if so, will the Minister take action to reduce the number of firearms needing to be seized by police?
Hon Nicole McKee: I remind the Member that in my capacity as Associate Minister of Justice (Firearms) I am not responsible for statements made by Superintendent Richard Wilson. I am happy to let the member know that if anything, this Government is providing Police with additional tools to allow them to seize more illicit firearms from criminals. The introduction of the Firearms Prohibition Orders Legislation Amendment Bill is evidence of this.
