1276 (2024). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: How many prisoners, if any, were reported for attacks on prison staff between 12 February 2024 and 19 February 2024?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that any prisoner resorting to violence is held to account. This may be through internal misconduct charges, a change in security classification, or referral to Police for consideration of criminal prosecution. I have interpreted the member’s question as relating to assaults that were reported to New Zealand Police. Corrections has worked alongside Police to use an online reporting tool to report assaults. The reporting tool enables Corrections’ staff to report assaults directly to Police through an online form, allowing Police to take action in a consistent and transparent way. I am advised that Corrections’ records through the online reporting tool show that seven prisoner-on-staff assaults were reported to Police between 12 February 2024 and 19 February 2024.
