1227 (2024). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Justice: What statistics or other information, if any, was the Minister referring to when he said there had been a "significant escalation" in gang-related violence and shootings in the past five years?
Hon Paul Goldsmith: We have seen numerous instances of brazen, inter-gang conflict and shootings over the last five years, including:
· the 2021 Sofitel hotel shooting during a conflict between the Head Hunters and the Mongols in Auckland;
· a string of drive-by shootings across Auckland in 2022, including seven shootings in one night during a conflict between the Tribesmen and the Killer Bees; and
· a string of drive-by shootings in Ōpōtiki in 2023, during a conflict between Black Power and the Mongrel Mob.
We are committed to combatting gang harms and restoring law and order in New Zealand.
