1168 (2024). Lan Pham to the Associate Minister for the Environment: How many tonnes of synthetic fertiliser were imported into New Zealand in the 2022 and 2023 calendar years respectively?

Hon Andrew Hoggard: In 2022, New Zealand imported approximately 657,000 tonnes of synthetic nitrogenous fertiliser. In 2023, this had dropped by 18% to around 536,000 tonnes. (Around 98% of this was for agricultural use, and around 2% for industrial use.) On average, the nitrogen content of the imported fertiliser was 37%. This means that the net amount of nitrogen imported to fertilise soil was approximately 247,000 tonnes in 2022 and 200,000 tonnes in 2023.
