910 (2025). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Minister of Police
Written Question
Published date: 12 Feb 2025
910 (2025). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Minister of Police: What is the number of gang assaults on Police officers, broken down by district for December 2024?
Hon Mark Mitchell: I refer the Member to the attached table, which shows the number of occurrences with ‘Assault on Police’ offences and a proceeding decision against a gang member made in December 2024.
These are counts of occurrences, not people, nor charges, nor convictions. One occurrence could have multiple offences, victims, and offenders.
There are 12 offence codes that specifically relate to assault on a police officer. In addition to those offences, there are other offences that may not specifically mention a police officer, but could still be used to describe a similar situation. For example, an offence of “wound with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (firearm)” could be used and it does not mention a police officer specifically. The decision about which offence code to use in a given case is made based on known evidence and circumstances of each case, with the consideration of the Solicitor-General guidelines. The provided data is for the specific offence codes only, and therefore it may not be representative of all assaults on police officers.
Please note that gang information is snapshot data, and some of these individuals may not have been gang members at the time of the proceeding decision, and conversely, there may have been people who were gang members at the time of the proceeding decision but are no longer recorded as gang members.
Data in this response is drawn from a dynamic operational database and is subject to change as new information is recorded or updated.
