868 (2025). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister responsible for Ministerial Services: Why is the briefing paper titled Premier House Priorities still under active consideration given this briefing is dated 12 March 2024?
Rt Hon Christopher Luxon: The briefing titled Premier House Priorities and dated 12 March 2024 gave a strategic overview of the long-term options for the site. The briefing references the ‘Report on the Long-term Stewardship of Te Whare Pirimia’ by the Premier House Board’ which has been proactively released by the Department of Internal Affairs - www.dia.govt.nz/Proactive-Releases#MS. Each of the options for the future of the site as a national heritage asset involve significant investment. They require careful consideration in a time when we are promoting fiscal constraint. A cautious approach to decisions involving such significant cost is appropriate. In the meantime, the focus has been on maintaining Premier House so it is protected and remains useful. The details and costs of required maintenance and modest upgrades to use the property for functions, and as my Wellington residence, have been released under the Official Information Act and are available on the Department’s website.
