644 (2026). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: Why has Kāinga Ora’s role in Large Scale Projects been refocused on social housing renewal and how, if at all, will this help the Government improve housing availability and affordability?

Hon Chris Bishop: Refocusing the LSPs on social housing renewal will help to address concerns that Kāinga Ora had too many, often competing and unfunded objectives. This Government is improving housing affordability by fixing the fundamentals. This means making it easier to build housing and ensuring that there is an abundance of developable urban land. Our Resource Management Act reforms will cut red tape and make it easier to build housing, and our Going for Housing Growth policy, will free up land, improve infrastructure funding and financing, and provide incentives for councils and communities to grow. The best way to support affordability is to fix the fundamentals, and that's what we are doing. However, there will always be some people who need support - no matter how affordable the general market is. As such, direct government housing support should be focused on those in most need.
