463 (2024). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Attorney-General: In respect of judicial appointments does she agree with the statement of the Chief Justice that "today we must seek more than gender diversity. It is, for example, a pressing issue that Māori are underrepresented in our judiciary. This is cause for concern given the critical issues that remain to be worked out in the area of Treaty obligations and the place of tikanga in our law. It is cause for concern when Māori are over represented in every negative step of our criminal justice system."

Hon Judith Collins: I agree with the Chief Justice that, in respect of judicial appointments, we must seek a diversity greater than gender diversity alone, although that remains important. Ultimately, Judicial appointments will be made based on merit.
