435 (2026). Ingrid Leary to the Minister of Internal Affairs: What evidence has been used to settle on the training that firefighters, career and volunteer, currently receive?

Hon Brooke van Velden: I am advised that the training Fire and Emergency’s firefighters receive reflects the operational requirements and training frameworks of the former New Zealand Fire Service and Rural Fire Authorities and has been refined over time in response to operational experience. I am further advised that Fire and Emergency is developing a new Operational Capability Model to more explicitly link training requirements to the risks faced by brigades, districts, national functions, and international deployments. The organisation is also redeveloping its Training and Progression System to align with this model.
