273 (2024). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Justice: Does the Minister (or the Associate Minister) consider that the Treaty of Waitangi creates a right to self determination of individuals?

Hon Paul Goldsmith: The Treaty of Waitangi is a foundational document in our constitutional system. It recognises tino rangatiratanga of Māori in Article 2. Exactly what that means in a modern democratic society is rightly subject of ongoing debate.
