194 (2024). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Justice: Does the Minister agree that youth crime and youth imprisonment have overall been trending down since 2014?
Hon Paul Goldsmith: I am advised that the number of Police proceedings against youth has decreased by 23% from the year ending November 2014 to the year ending November 2023. However, in the last year, the number of proceedings against children and young people has increased by 11%. I am also advised that the number of youth ordered or sentenced to imprisonment or supervision with residence in a youth justice facility has decreased by 46% from the year ending June 2014 to June 2023. However, this increased by 16% from June 2022 to June 2023. I also note that that 17-year-olds have been included in the definition of youth since 1 July 2019.
