188 (2024). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Associate Minister of Finance: How many EQC claims were made in the aftermath of the severe weather events that hit the North Island in January 2023 and how many remain open?
Hon David Seymour: In January 2023 a severe weather event hit the upper North Island and claims were lodged in the months that followed. As of 29 January 2024, Toka Tū Ake EQC had received 4655 EQC over claims for this event. Of these claims I have been advised that as of 29 January 2024, 3158 have been settled. The majority of the outstanding 1497 claims are complex land insurance claims. New Zealand is one of the only countries in the world to offer land insurance due to the complexities involved.
