8 (2026). Camilla Belich to the Minister for Emergency Management and Recovery: What review of the 111 system has been undertaken since the Government Inquiry into the Response to the North Island Severe Weather Events, and what changes, if any, have been made to improve information sharing between emergency services?
Hon Mark Mitchell: Multiple agencies and service providers are involved in the Emergency Contact System (ECS), including Emergency Service Organisations (Police, Fire and Emergency NZ and the Ambulance Services), as well as the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), New Zealand telecommunications companies, and electricity providers.
In November 2025, the Minister of Police and Emergency Management and Recovery, along with the Minister for Media and Communications, agreed to the establishment of a cross-agency working group including representation from each of the ESOs, MBIE and NEMA to develop advice and options to improve the Emergency Contact System, and report back with advice.
